Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning Inititive Going For Goals

SEAL- Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning-  is an element of the Behaviour and Attendance strand of the Primary National Strategy.

There are five broad social and emotional aspects of learning amongst the twelve aspects of learning in the Excellence and Enjoyment document. They are:
  • Self-awareness
  • Managing feelings
  • Motivation
  • Empathy
  • Social Skills
Within each of the social and emotional aspects of learning there are a number of individual skills. Social, emotional and behavioural skills underlie almost every aspect of school, home and community life, including effective learning and getting on with other people. They are fundamental to school improvement.
By using the SEAL curriculum resources, children will learn the skills to:
  • be effective and successful leaners
  • make and sustain friendships
  • resolve conflict effectively and fairly
  • solve problems with others or alone
  • manage strong feelings such a frustration, anger and anxiety
  • persist in the face of difficulties
  • work and play co-operatively
  • compete fairly and win and lose with dignity
  • recognise and stand up for their rights and the rights of others
  • understand and value the differences between people
One strand of the SEAL initiative is 'Going for Goals'.

This theme focuses primarily on the key aspect of motivation, with a subsidiary focus on self-awareness. It gives an important opportunity for all children's abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued.
The underlying pre-requisites for successful goal-directed learning and behaviour are emphasised. They include:
  • Taking responsibility
  • Building feelings of confidence and self-efficacy
  • Believing that what we do makes a difference
  • Resilience- bouncing back after difficulties, mistakes or failure
  • Persistence
Goal directed behaviour is only valuable if we are able to make wise and balanced choices about our goals. This theme provides opportunities for children to consider this and practice problem solving strategies. This is where Skip2bfit fits in as skip2bfit helps to show children that they need to motivate themselves to improve, as explained in the testimonial here.
